    SMD is all very well for manufacturing, but I need it in a through hole form, or mounted on a PCB with through hole connections, for prototyping.

    I can't get over how beautiful the plant looks. I made capacitors for Kemet at the old Fountain Inn plant in the early 90s. JR1204s to be exact. We had just gotten our ISO 9000 certification and we were on top of the world. My father worked there for over 20 years and helped transfer the APA line to Matamoros. It has always been a great company with high standards and good working conditions.

      all capacitors. every single one. not just capacitance, but also esr, dissipation, discards shorted ones, operation at DC bias, takes less than a second to test. So they can test millions per day. More extensive tests (like temperature stability, aging, vibration, mechanical stress, are done on samples, as they can take hours).

    How does the capacitor provide safety? What does it protect and from what?

      The naming is confusing. The purpose of these "safety caps" is not to primarily to provide safety per se, it's to provide EMI filtering. For that role, these caps are designed to fail safely. The "safety capacitor" term really should be "safe-failing capacitor".

    So if I got it right it's much better to store electronics in cold rooms, probably batteries and car batteries too. The latter seem to be less operational because the chemical reaction that causes their deterioration slows down?
